Introducing PUNCHBAG, the creative sibling duo shattering expectations in the music scene. With a unique sound and an innovative approach, they redefine what it means to be an artist today.

PUNCHBAG arrive like an intimidatingly sharp switchblade wrapped in ribbons and tissue paper – dangerous, unexpected, and utterly unconcerned with fitting in with anyone’s preconceptions. The sibling duo of Clara and Anders Bach slice through the thick fog of modern irony while maintaining the playful spirit of those who know precisely when to take things seriously – and, more importantly, when not to.

Their self-proclaimed “aggressive hopecore” emerges from the most unlikely of recording studios (a literal wardrobe), where discarded clothes and a temperamental microphone stand bear witness to the birth of something new. It’s here, in this unique space, that PUNCHBAG develop a sound that embodies the paradox of modern existence.

Their journey began during the global crisis of Covid, forcing them into a creative collaboration that neither had expected. Clara remembers, “It was really only because of Covid that we started working together sort of by accident.” Their humble beginnings undoubtedly paved the way for the confident swagger reflected in their debut EP, ‘I’m Not Your Punchbag’, releasing via Mute Records this spring.

Previously, both siblings carved distinct musical paths; Anders excelled in a post-rock band called Butch Kassidy, while Clara focused on her individual project. Eventually, their artistic fates intertwined, leading to the birth of PUNCHBAG. They emphasize their collaborative essence: “We both write and produce everything together.” This teamwork shines a light on the peculiarities and complexities of the world around them.

In the age of endless scrolling and digital distractions, PUNCHBAG emerges as a refreshing force, coining their sound as “Aggressive Hopecore.” Clara reflects, “We live in an irony epidemic, and everything is meme-able, but alongside that, things in the world are pretty serious.” This tension between digital absurdity and genuine emotion permeates their work, allowing them to connect with listeners in unique ways.

Their debut EP features a compelling and diverse array of tracks drawn from sessions in Berlin, Whitstable, and their London base, collaborating with talented peers like Michelle Leonard and Dee Adam. Clara explains, “We recorded everything at home together, just sitting in front of a laptop for weeks.” This raw, DIY aesthetic enhances the connection listeners feel with the music.

Each track on the EP represents a slice of life in the 21st century, from struggles with technology to unwelcome dinner table comments. “We had no rules, and we hope you can hear that,” they say, embracing a spirit of experimentation that defines their work.

As they continue to evolve, PUNCHBAG’s ambitions are both practical and playful. With a busy 2025 calendar filled with festivals and their first-ever headline gig, Clara and Anders are eager to bring their heartfelt performances to audiences. “We want each song to feel like they could stand alone strongly,” they say, ensuring that their music resonates on multiple levels.

Ultimately, PUNCHBAG’s mission transcends mere entertainment; they aim to turn the everyday tumult of present-day living into something raw, urgent, and uplifting. With their debut EP, they invite listeners to experience life’s complexities through their lens, embracing both joy and catharsis.

PUNCHBAG’s EP ‘I’m Not Your Punchbag’ is out on 2nd May.
