Yannis & The Yaw Ignite Musical Flames with ‘Under The Strikes’

Music has the profound power to capture the essence of our experiences, and the latest release from Yannis & The Yaw does just that. ‘Under The Strikes’ is a single that turns the tumultuous Paris refuse strikes into a riveting soundscape of emotion and commentary. Yannis Philippakis of Foals, together with the rhythmic genius of the late Tony Allen, sends listeners on an auditory journey through a city steeped in beauty, yet shadowed by societal discord.
Symbolism in ‘Under The Strikes’
The juxtaposition of life’s peaks and valleys
A farewell coda from the late Tony Allen
Yannis Philippakis shares his thoughts on the inspiration for the song:
‘Under The Strikes’ was inspired by walking to the studio during Paris’s refuse strikes, where trash was piled three stories high. We were born into the greatest period of history and yet, things seemed to be disintegrating at the same time.
But the single isn’t just a reflection—it also serves as an homage to Tony Allen. His percussive mastery lent a heartbeat to the track, making the coda at the end of the single all the more poignant, as it was the last piece the duo collaborated on.
