Ýr Jóhannsdóttir, also known as Ýrúrarí, has a unique approach to art that involves crafting knit and felted characters to accompany her throughout the day. These whimsical creations add a touch of humor and personality to mended garments, and are made using discarded materials, showcasing Ýr’s commitment to sustainability. Her work is both playful and eco-friendly, transforming items that would otherwise end up in landfills into unique and cheeky wearables that bring joy to those who wear them.

Ýrúrarí, the artistic persona of Ýr Jóhannsdóttir, has spent the last few years creating an extensive cast of felted and knitted characters that she carries with her throughout the day. Her designs often feature tongue-in-cheek humor, with balaclavas adorned with mouths and masks embellished with playful grins. These creations bring a touch of whimsy to the everyday, adding a dash of personality to otherwise ordinary garments.

What sets Ýrúrarí’s practice apart is her commitment to sustainability. Rather than using new materials, she focuses on transforming discarded garments and scraps into her wearable art. By mending and repurposing these materials, she not only reduces waste but also gives new life to items that would have otherwise been discarded.

If you happen to be in Copenhagen, you can see Ýrúrarí’s works in a group exhibition at Nordatlantens Brygge until January 28. In addition to her knit and felted characters, Ýrúrarí’s Pizza Time project caught attention for its use of leftover wool industry materials to create fiber-rich pies. This innovative approach to recycling earned her a nomination for Iceland’s Design Awards.
